Open plan living with harbour views

Entry to Sam and Rob's post WW1 semi-detached house was through their formal living room. A passage then gave access to two bedrooms and the rear of the house, where the kitchen, dining room and bathroom were situated. Downstairs was a tired bedroom and bathroom, a storeroom and an outside laundry.

The couple had always wanted to maximise their views so that they could enjoy harbour scenes from a family living area rather than their bathroom. At the same time, they wanted to optimise space in their home. This entailed relocating the bathroom closer to the bedrooms to create a new open plan kitchen, dining and living area.

Opening up the northern wall brightened the living space while Spotted Gum timber flooring added warmth. The open plan arrangement now flows onto a new glass and tile balcony, allowing them to enjoy alfresco meals. A parents' retreat was created downstairs for the couple. The bedroom now has an ensuite and walk-in robe and opens onto a private deck with access to the garden.
